What is sleep-disordered breathing (SDB)?

Symptoms can vary from person to person, however, daytime sleepiness is the most common. Sleep apnea doesn’t typically fully wake a person up, just enough to interrupt the sleep cycle, affecting the quality of sleep; therefore causing sleepiness as well as other possible symptoms during the day.

Many of the symptoms that occur during sleep aren’t noticed by the patient but can be witnessed by another person. These can include loud snoring, unusual breathing noises, or even a noticeable lapse in breathing.

Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

  • Depression
  • Waking up choking, gasping or feeling out of breath
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Increased heart rate
  • High blood pressure
  • Lack of energy during the day
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Changes in urination
  • Frequent heartburn
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Sore throat or dry mouth upon waking up
  • Night sweats
  • Restless sleep
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Loud snoring
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Forgetfulness
The Sleep Centre of Hotchkiss highlights the work of Dr. Victoria Shklovsky who provides sleep studies and fittings of her revolutionary dental device designed to open airways. This groundbreaking work provides a safe and natural alternative to CPAP.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Maintains the lower jaw in the forward position during sleep, thus opening the airway.

Oral appliance therapy treats OSA and snoring by preventing the airway from becoming obstructed during sleep similarly to CPAP-devices.

Oral appliances accomplish this by protruding the lower jaw, which leads to:

  • Increased retro-lingual space
  • Increased tension on the soft palate that, when relaxed, causes snoring
  • Open the upper airway at most levels
  • Decreased collapsibility of the upper airway

While my primary function is that of TMJ treatment, our mission is also providing an adjunct with Integrative Functional Therapy to re-balance upper and lower jaw position to the overall balance of the body. Our goal is to provide strain reduction in the entire body in a coordinated protocol with upper cervical therapy for proper alignment of the head and neck. After the alignment, a lower removable dental TMJ orthotic will allow for a jaw relationship that supports whole body alignment.
In our Integrative Functional Therapy- Alignment is first. Taking the time to look at all body structural interactions to provide effective change and improvement to muscle strain and pain. No part of the body works in isolation so a coordinated effort works best at finding solutions.
With our coordinated team of bodyworkers here at Wellspring Vitality and the work of Core Alignment Therapy and other manual therapies, we can achieve together the most effective and holistic relief of TMJ pain.

Thank you for the opportunity to present my treatment solutions that can allow patients to REALLY LIVE without pain!

Best regards,
Dr. Victoria Shklovsky
