Koa Powers, LMT/Lomi Lomi Practitioner/Ho’omanamana Movement Coach

Koa Powers has been a licensed massage therapist since 2017 and has 13 years experience working in immersive Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian Massage) trainings around the world. Koa is passionate about offering people pathways towards holistic wellbeing through massage, movement and mindfulness.

He began his study of Lomi Lomi with Jody Mountain, student of the late Kahu Abraham Kawaii. Three years after beginning his study of massage he enrolled in the Maui School of Therapeutic Massage where he deepened his understanding of Anatomy/Physiology and widened his scope of practice. Modalities Koa has studied include Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, Swedish, Deep Tissue, Neuromuscular Therapy, Body Mobilization Technique, Prenatal Massage, Reflexology, Shiatsu/Acupressure, Biodynamic Craniosacral and Hot Stone Massage.

Koa’s specific massage style is called “Lomi Lomi Ke Ala Hōkū” which translates to “massage journey to the stars.” This ancient Hawaiian bodywork was typically performed to honor ceremonial rites of passage, in sessions from 10 hours to several days with multiple practitioners, chanting, prayer, and drumming supporting one individual.

The core elements of Lomi Lomi are:

  • Wave-Like Rhythmic Flow: continuous, sweeping strokes with their forearms, palms, and elbows that mimic ocean waves. Unlike some massage techniques that focus on specific muscle groups, Lomi Lomi encourages energy to move freely throughout the body.
  • Mind-Body-Spirit Connection: Designed to quiet mental chatter, release deep-seated physical and emotional blockages, and reawaken an alignment with Spirit and life purpose. By sensing areas of tension or energy blockages, Koa adjusts pressure and movement to restore balance and enhance the body’s natural healing capabilities.
  • Joint mobilization and gentle stretching: Lomi Lomi incorporates gentle stretching and joint rotations to improve mobility and flexibility. These movements help release built-up tension, increase circulation, and enhance overall well-being. The seamless integration of massage and movement makes Lomilomi highly effective for relieving stress, reducing muscle stiffness, and promoting overall vitality.

Koa also has years of experience working in Swedish and Deep Tissue massage.
